At Athens EyeCare Clinic, our Neuro-Ophthalmologists specialise in caring for patients with vision problems related to the nervous system — including optic nerve disorders, visual field loss, unexplained or transient loss of vision, visual disturbances, cranial nerve palsies, double vision, abnormal eye movements, myasthenia gravis and unequal pupil size.

What we treat

Neuro-ophthalmology covers problems where the eye itself is healthy but the nerves or the brain behind it are not. The conditions we see most often are disorders of the optic nerve such as optic neuritis and anterior ischaemic optic neuropathy; palsies of the nerves that move the eye, the oculomotor, trochlear and abducens nerves, which cause double vision; nystagmus; blepharospasm; and headaches and migraine with visual symptoms.

How we investigate

The assessment combines a full eye examination with tests of how the visual system is working: visual field testing on the Humphrey analyser to map any loss of peripheral or central vision, OCT to measure the nerve fibre layer of the optic nerve, orthoptic examination to measure eye movements and the alignment of the two eyes, and fundus photography to document the optic disc.

When to book

• The same day: sudden double vision, sudden loss of vision in one eye, or a drooping eyelid that appears together with double vision or a headache.
• Within days: pain on moving the eye with blurred or washed-out colour vision, unequal pupils, loss of part of your field of vision, or eye movements you cannot control.
• At your convenience: headaches you suspect are linked to your eyes, involuntary blinking or closing of the eyelids, or visual disturbances that come and go.

Your specialist

Neuro-ophthalmology at Athens EyeCare is led by Dr Nikolaos Vryonis, whose subspecialty training in paediatric ophthalmology, strabismus and neuro-ophthalmology was completed in the United Kingdom, including his years as a consultant at Alder Hey Children's Hospital in Liverpool.
